You Don’t Know Jack Alcott

Jack Alcott in his own words.

I was born in Nashville and I grew up in Franklin, Tennessee. I love the south and its proximity to cities like Nashville. There’s never a shortage of things to do there. It’s such an amazing place. In Nashville the street performers are exceptional. I remember going to other cities like Las Vegas or New York for the very first time, and just realizing I’ve taken my Nashville street performers for granted.

ON GROWING UP

I'm a huge extrovert, and I generally just need to be engaged with people at all times. I'm captain stir crazy if there's nothing to do. But as I've gotten older, it's so nice to just sit on the porch and look at the sunset. I sound like an old man, but where I live in Tennessee, it's such a wonderful way to recharge.

LIFE LESSONS

Don't take your your friends and family for granted. If you're going through something it's easy to feel lonely and sad and, when you're in those feelings, it's easy to spiral. And then when your parents or close friends are concerned about you, it's in those moments, I think it's really easy to be like;I'm fine, go away and push people away. Subconsciously we know those people are always around. But their interest is so indicative to the love those people have for you. It's not to be taken for granted. We often lash out at the most important people around us, because they are always there. Instead we should lean on them and seek their support.

ON FINDING HIS ARTISTRY

I was in a Chekhov class at the University of South Carolina. I had good grasp of the language, the story, the character objectives and all the cerebral stuff. But for whatever reason, I had a moment where you’re listening to your scene partner and you sort of forget where you are. Jack wasn’t here anymore. I don’t remember what happened, but the scene finished and realized I had sort of disappeared into the world. It wasn’t a big “I’ve become the character” type of thing—but immediately afterwards I turned to my teacher for feedback. I was told, you just touched that thing you’ve been looking for.

“Every single role I’ve had has been some damaged, tortured, young man that goes through some sort of awful trauma in his time. I’ve not done any romcoms yet, or anything where I’m dancing around and being a goof, which is how I generally am in real life.”
