First Impressions: Michael Evans Behling

Michael Evans Behling has one of those faces.

Words by Dio Anthony

He looks familiar, and has kind eyes. A friendly face amongst the crowd. Born in Columbus, Ohio, Behling was on the pre-med track at Indiana State University, before making his way to the city of Angels. Today he’s playing Jordan Baker on All American, and has a clothing lined called DesignedAt5AM. American Studies grills Michael with 11 questions to get to know this new face a little better.

AS: CW’s All American deals with the portrayal of different walks of life and how unique they often are. How would you describe your own walk through this life so far.

MEB: Yes, my walk has been different from everyone else’s. Growing up in the Midwest on multiple acres of land afforded me a bit of a different outlook. One that relied heavily on fresh air for clarity and entertainment on the land with numerous animals—dogs, cats, chickens, & ducks. My walk is still unfolding---expanding, and for that, I am grateful.

AS: Do you feel like your job as an actor is tied to a higher purpose? If so, which?

MEB: I don’t believe my job is tied to some grandiose purpose. I wake up every day with the opportunity to pursue my dreams of television and film. Diving into narratives that bring me joy, but most importantly, inform and hopefully inspire. Now the real purpose is rooted in using my platform for good—and bringing greater awareness to issues near and dear to my heart—my work with St. Judes Children’s, mental health resources, and the Boys and Girls Club.

AS: If you had to name this phase or era in your life, what would that name be?

MEB: I am in the exploring phase. I’m still new to my career, and I want to continue to learn as much as I can about the industry, in front of the camera and behind. I take every opportunity to absorb what’s happening on the other side of the camera and feel very blessed to have access to so many incredible resources.

AS: What’s the last thing you Googled?

MEB: I Googled the term “Botfly.” I saw a Tik-Tok and got super curious.

AS: What was the idea behind the concept of Designed at 5am? Do you believe the early bird gets the worm?

MEB: The idea is to get after it early, yes. The early bird gets the worm. The idea derived from my partners and I all participating in sports and getting used to a routine of waking up early to get work in. This mantra has stuck with me over the years and extends how I approach my day.

AS: What’s your favorite part of the day and why?

MEB: Early evening. Easily my favorite because I enjoy the sunset. It’s calming to watch it as I drive, or when I’m still, to sit and enjoy.

AS: If you could have dinner with any public figure—alive or dead, who would it be?

MEB: Heath Ledger. He is an inspiration to me not only in acting, but just as a creative person.

AS: What was the first historical event you were aware of?

MEB: The first historical event I recall is September 11, 2001.

AS: Is there a movie you can watch repeatedly and never grow tired of?

MEB: The Dark Knight. It is a film that first inspired me to take the first steps into this entertainment world. The amount of talent in the movie is enormous, but I was instantly drawn to Heath Ledger’s character of the Joker. Ledger’s sheer talent to completely transform and deliver one of the most iconic performances of all time.

AS: Is there a quote or passage from a book that you always come back to? What does it mean to you?

MEB: “What’s the bravest thing you’ve ever said?’ Asked the boy. ‘Help.’ Said the Horse” From ‘The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse’ To me, it’s a reminder that asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness, but rather strength and courage.

AS: I read that you meditate in the morning, which is a learned practice—can you walk us through how you arrived at a daily meditation practice? What has it come to mean for you?

MEB: I found meditation in 2020. I was dealing with some health issues and sought out help. Meditation became something to reset my mind, decompress, and find moments of peace. Practicing meditation before I  start the day, especially before a work day, sets the day in a positive light.
